Every year too many people are injured in violent attacks
in Scotland, below is a message from Jack McConnel
MSP...
“Scotland is too violent. Too many lives
are lost and too many people are seriously injured
through needless, preventable violent attacks. It
is not only the victim who is affected: the impact
is felt by the families of both victim and attacker,
as well as by the wider community.
Violence whether in the home, in the street or after
a football game is totally unacceptable. We will not
sit back and accept that violence is simply a way
of life in some parts of Scotland. As well as giving
the police and courts more powers to deal with those
who are violent we must challenge the attitudes of
those who think it acceptable to carry and use weapons
and to attack others.
Excellent work is already being done by the Violence
Reduction Unit and I am delighted to be supporting
the Unit in its expansion as a national centre of
expertise.
We need to work together to find effective ways of
reducing violence and, over the long term, to change
behaviour so that we can all live alongside one another
in a culture of safety and respect”. |
